The Insurance Institute's Curriculum Connections resources apply to many subject areas, including Ethics, Math and Career Studies.
Ethics
Suggestions for Ethics teachers:
- Ethics in Business: Use Lesson #5 in Your People in You're IN Business to articulate the attributes and actions of an exemplary employee and employer to investigate the moral, legal and ethical rationale for a business code of conduct. Lesson helps to understand the value of guiding principles/values in business and to identify and apply the key components of a code of conduct (for electronic communications in a company).
- Ethics and Shared Responsibility: If discussing topics such as ‘duty of care' and ‘good faith,' teachers will find the following lesson plans helpful:
- § Law, Vignette3 in Risk Responsibility Reality (pages 18 to 25) examines the concept of ‘duty of care' and in particular examines legal case studies regarding host liability and the legal, moral and ethical implications of host liability (serving drinks to drivers)
- § Life Skills, Vignette 1 in Risk Responsibility Reality (pages 28 to 31) examines decision-making and the concept of ‘good faith'
- Ethics in Personal Relationships: Use Life Skills, Vignette 2 in Risk Responsibility Reality (pages 32 to 35) to teach about defining the characteristics of a positive friendship, to demonstrate an understanding of how ethics relate to friendship, and to explore the ethics and consequences of lending other people's property to someone else.
Math
Suggestions for math teachers:
- Teach the law of large numbers and probability using the teacher's notes and student activity sheet of Lesson #1, Part B: Large Numbers and Probability in the You're IN Business resource.
- Use the teacher's notes and student activity sheets in Lesson #3: Running the Numbers to teach about how insurance premiums, claims and profits are determined mathematically based on severity, probability and frequency.
- If teaching budgeting, the Family Studies section of Risk Responsibility Reality has basic budgeting exercises, for example: determining the true cost of a car.
Career Studies
Suggestions for career studies teachers:
- Order an Educators' Career Connections Kit to introduce careers in insurance to your students. It contains a career video, a teacher's resource with lesson plan, and a class set of high school brochures.
- Request a free classroom presentation by one of our Ambassadors who can present their career and education journey to your students.
- Assign as homework an exploration of the "High School Student" section of this Web site where we have identified nine roles within insurance and provide qualifications, education requirements, starting salaries and career prospects.
