Feed the Minds of Youth reaches nearly 1,500 grade 9 students in one day!

On Nov 2nd, 2016 the Insurance Institute’s local chapters and Institute offices across the country opened their doors to welcome grade nine students and their parents as part of our Feed the Minds of Youth initiative which takes place every year in support of the Learning Partnership’s “Take our Kids to Work Day”.

Students participated in engaging presentations by insurance professionals, watched our insurance career video and played games that teach the importance of insurance in our day to day lives.
In addition to holding these luncheons at our local offices, we provided Event-in-Box kits to support organizations that were holding their own events. The kits included brochures and journals for the participants as well as resources for organizers to help plan their day.

Through this initiative students are exposed to insurance in a fun and interactive way, learning about the world of possibilities that a career in the industry can offer. This is a valuable opportunity for us to plant the seed early and encourage students to consider pursuing insurance education down the road.

Between our luncheons and the events held by the organizations themselves we reached nearly 1,500 participants this year. This is our highest turn out to date and we couldn’t be more pleased. The feedback we received was not only overwhelmingly positive, but made it clear that our message was well received by students and parents alike.

We asked those who participated in our luncheons what they liked, what they learned and what they were most interested in and here are some of the responses:

Students

I liked… “that we played a game to see what would happen if you didn’t buy insurance.”
I learned … “ that there is a whole other side to insurance that can excite people.”
I was most interested in… “how they made insurance seem so interesting. I used to think that insurance was boring. That thought has definitely diminished while being here.”

Parents

I liked… “the games that made it interesting for the kids and related it back to insurance.”
I learned… “It’s never too late to change paths”
I was most interested in… “seeing the grade 9 students absorb what the insurance industry has to offer.”

Thanks to everyone who participated by attending or hosting an event. What a great impact we made in one day- we couldn’t have done it without you and look forward to an even bigger and better Feed the Minds of Youth next year!
